From Practice to Degree: Your Pathway into University
How experienced practitioners in Youth Work, Adult Learning, and Community Development can gain academic credit and join our MA (Hons) programme through RPL.
At the University of Dundee, we believe higher education should be accessible to everyone, especially those who have dedicated years to making a difference in communities but feel that university “is not for them.” Our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) modules are designed to change that mindset.
These modules are aimed at practitioners with rich experience in Youth Work, Adult Learning, and Community Development who lack formal academic qualifications. Through RPL, we accredit prior practice experience, enabling you to join our MA (Hons) Community Development and Youth Work degree at an advanced stage. You can find out more on the RPL in this video we made with our partners at the SCQF.
What Are the RPL Modules?
Level 7 RPL
Awards 120 SCQF credits at Level 7
Enables entry into Year 2 of the degree
Assessment:
An e-portfolio of evidence mapped to the seven competences of professional practice (CLD Standards Council Scotland)
A statement of support from a line manager, supervisor, or mentor detailing your experience and practice hours
Level 8 RPL
Awards 240 SCQF credits at Level 8
Enables entry into Year 3 of the degree
Assessment:
An oral viva assessed jointly by academic staff and a qualified CLD practitioner
A supporting report from a line manager, mentor, or supervisor confirming practice hours
Both modules include online learning activities to scaffold academic skills and prepare you for assessment, plus online or in-person workshops and webinars with programme tutors.
Why Choose RPL?
Reflect on, and critically evaluate, your professional experience
Gain academic credit without repeating what you already know
Bridge the gap into higher education with structured support
Important Considerations
Direct entry into Year 3 means your grades immediately count toward your final degree classification. Entry into Year 2 offers a year of academic scaffolding before grades impact your overall mark.
We strongly recommend a conversation with our staff team to decide which route is best for you.
